While outside of the school people use normal money, in Oderia and in magical places, everyone has to change their currency to magical currency.
It is quite simple: 1 narcei is 100 nehalei. Every new student automatically gets a certain amount (as stated in the character creation), but adults probably already have magical currency and thus they use that.
